March 1, 2025

March 1st marks National Pig Day, a time to celebrate these intelligent, affectionate animals who are often misunderstood. For centuries, pigs have been seen as livestock, raised for food rather than recognized for their deep emotional intelligence, loyalty, and companionship. At EPIC Outreach, we know firsthand that pigs are so much more than their outdated reputation suggests.

Florida is one of the top states for pigs in need, with thousands of pigs abandoned, rehomed, or surrendered each year when their owners realize that pigs require as much commitment as a dog or cat—sometimes more. Many people adopt “mini pigs” under the assumption that they’ll stay small, not realizing that most pigs grow between 150 to 300 pounds. Without proper education and support, these pigs often end up neglected, abandoned, or left with rescues that are already at full capacity.

National Pig Day is more than a celebration—it’s a call to action to challenge outdated perceptions and advocate for pigs as companions, not commodities.

The Truth About Pigs: Why They Make Amazing Pets

Pigs are often compared to dogs, and for good reason. Studies show that pigs are one of the top five smartest animals in the world, ranking just behind chimpanzees, dolphins, and elephants. They have problem-solving skills, recognize their names, and can even learn tricks like sitting, spinning, or using a litter box.

Beyond their intelligence, pigs are deeply emotional animals. They experience joy, sadness, excitement, and grief, forming strong bonds with both humans and other animals. At EPIC Outreach, we’ve seen pigs wag their tails when happy, nuzzle up to visitors for affection, and even display protective behaviors over their companions. They communicate with over 20 different vocalizations, expressing everything from hunger to happiness.

Yet, despite their intelligence and affectionate nature, pigs remain one of the most discarded and misunderstood animals in the pet world. Lack of awareness about their needs leads to a cycle of overbreeding, neglect, and abandonment.

Meet Jimmy: A Pig Who Changed Minds

Jimmy is one of the many pigs who arrived at EPIC Outreach after facing an uncertain future. Originally meant to be raised for food, his owners had a change of heart when they realized he was so much more than a farm animal. They saw his playful personality, his trust in humans, and the way he flopped over for belly rubs just like a puppy. Instead of sending him to slaughter, they chose to give him a second chance.

Today, Jimmy is thriving at our sanctuary. He greets visitors with curiosity, follows volunteers around the pasture, and has become a beloved ambassador for pigs as pets. Many who meet Jimmy leave with a new perspective, realizing that pigs aren’t just animals on a farm—they are companions who deserve love, respect, and proper care.

How You Can Help Pigs Like Jimmy

National Pig Day is the perfect opportunity to educate and advocate for pigs. Here’s how you can make a difference:

✔️ Share the Truth About Pigs – Challenge outdated myths by sharing facts about their intelligence, emotions, and need for companionship.

✔️ Consider Adoption Over Breeding – If you’ve ever thought about bringing a pig into your life, adopt from a rescue instead of purchasing from a breeder.

✔️ Visit a Sanctuary – Meeting pigs in person is often the best way to change perceptions. Seeing their personalities firsthand can be life-changing.

✔️ Support Rescued Pigs – Whether through volunteering, advocacy, or spreading awareness, every small effort helps pigs in need find safety and love.

This National Pig Day, we invite you to see pigs differently. They are not just farm animals—they are pets, family members, and emotional beings who deserve respect.
