There are some animals who quietly change the course of your life without ever asking for recognition. They simply arrive, take up residence in your heart, and teach you lessons you didn’t know you needed to learn.
For us, that horse is BUCK.
BUCK joined the EPIC Outreach family in February 2020, but his story began long before ours. Born on May 10, 1999, this handsome Thoroughbred had already lived many chapters by the time he stepped off the trailer and onto the sanctuary grounds. Like so many horses, he had experienced both the highs and lows that come with being loved, needed, overlooked, and eventually searching for a safe place to land.
At EPIC, BUCK found just that.
He found green pastures to graze, friends to stand beside, volunteers who adored him, and visitors who instantly fell in love with his gentle spirit. He became one of the faces of the sanctuary representing steady, patient, and kind. For many, BUCK was the first horse they ever touched. Children nervously reached out to stroke his nose, only to discover a soft muzzle and an even softer heart waiting on the other side of their fear.
He taught lessons without ever saying a word. He taught us to slow down, to breathe, to stand quietly in the sunshine, to appreciate the simple things like a scratch in the right spot, a favorite treat, the comfort of companionship.
As the years passed, age began to whisper its truths. BUCK grew tired. His body carried the wear of a life well lived. Together with our veterinary team and after many conversations, observations, tears, and sleepless nights, we came to the difficult but compassionate decision that the greatest gift we could offer him was a peaceful goodbye.
At the end of June, we will help BUCK make his final journey.
There is never a “right” time to say goodbye to an animal we love. Even when we know it is the kindest choice, it still breaks our hearts. But loving animals has taught us that our responsibility extends beyond giving them good days. It also means protecting them from unnecessary suffering and ensuring their final chapter is written with dignity, comfort, and peace.
BUCK has given us so much over these last several years.
He has been part of school visits and public tours. He has welcomed thousands of hands reaching out in kindness. He has inspired stories, photographs, and memories that will live on far beyond his physical presence. He reminded us that older animals still have so much to teach and so much love left to give.
His legacy isn’t found in grand accomplishments. It’s found in the little moments. A child beaming after feeding him a carrot. The quiet comfort of leaning against his shoulder. The way he made people feel seen, safe, and connected. As we prepare to say goodbye, we find ourselves returning to gratitude.
Thank you, BUCK, for sharing your life with us. Thank you for your patience. Thank you for your gentle spirit. Thank you for trusting us to walk beside you through your final season.
We often say that rescue is about second chances. But perhaps what BUCK taught us most is that love isn’t measured by how long we have with someone. It’s measured in how deeply we choose to show up while we do.
As we honor BUCK’s life, we invite you to do the same. Share an extra treat with an old friend. Sit in the sunshine a little longer. Tell someone you love them. Offer kindness freely.
Because if BUCK taught us anything, it’s this: A life doesn’t have to be extraordinary to leave an extraordinary impact.
And oh, what an impact he made.
