Not every day at the sanctuary comes with a big rescue story or a dramatic moment. And truthfully, those ordinary days are some of my favorites. Recently, TAZ, KODY, BAHLOO, and OPIE enjoyed a little grooming session. When we were finished, they stood there looking quite pleased with themselves. And, of course they were wondering where their treats were.
It was nothing extraordinary. Just four horses, some brushes, a few treats, and time spent together.
But maybe those are the moments that matter most.
So much of caring for animals is found in the ordinary things we do every day. Brushing a coat. Filling a water trough. Tossing hay. Giving a belly rub. Standing quietly beside an animal we’ve known and loved for years. We spend so much of life waiting for the big moments that sometimes we forget how much goodness exists in the little ones.
The animals remind us to notice.
Notice the sunshine. Enjoy the treat. Lean into someone you love. Take the extra few minutes to brush the horse. Laugh when four freshly groomed faces stare at you because they know darn well you have snacks.
There is a lot of joy tucked inside an ordinary day when we slow down long enough to see it. Maybe that’s one more lesson the animals have been trying to teach us all along.
#BeKind — and don’t forget to enjoy the little things.
