September is Recovery Awareness Month, a time to honor the journeys of healing that happen in so many ways—for people, for animals, and for communities. At EPIC Outreach, recovery is at the heart of what we do. Every animal in need who finds sanctuary here has a story of survival, resilience, and, ultimately, hope.
Take DUNCAN the pig, for example. DUNCAN came to us after a devastating attack that left him badly injured and missing part of his ear. His beginning was marked by fear and pain, but his story didn’t end there. With time, medical care, and compassion, DUNCAN began to heal. Today, he is thriving—rolling in the hay, enjoying treats, and snuggling up with his friend JIMMY. His resilience is a daily reminder that healing is possible, even after hardship.
Or PORTIA, a pig who was once discarded but now lives in a forever home where she is cherished and safe (Doesn’t she look so happy in this picture). Her recovery wasn’t just about finding shelter—it was about discovering love and learning to trust again. And ZEKE and ZIMBA, the donkeys, who leaned into compassion—literally—when they began resting their heads against visitors as a sign of trust.
The truth is, recovery doesn’t happen overnight. It takes patience, kindness, and support. Animals teach us this lesson every day at the sanctuary. And just as they recover, so do the people who spend time here. Volunteers, families, and visitors often share how being at the farm brings them peace, comfort, and a sense of renewal. The sanctuary is not only a place for animals to heal, but also a place where hearts—human and animal alike—recover together.
As we honor Recovery Awareness Month, let’s remember that kindness is one of the most powerful tools for healing. Whether it’s offering patience to a struggling friend, volunteering time at a local shelter, or simply choosing to be gentle with yourself, every act of compassion creates space for recovery.
Because recovery isn’t just about surviving—it’s about thriving. And with kindness, we can all find the freedom to heal.
With gratitude,
The EPIC Outreach Family
