When people think about caring for a pig, hoof trims probably aren’t the first thing that comes to mind. But just like we need regular haircuts and trim our fingernails, and just as horses need routine farrier visits, pigs need their hooves trimmed to keep them healthy and comfortable.

In the wild, pigs naturally wear down their hooves by traveling long distances over rough terrain in search of food. Pet pigs and sanctuary pigs live very different lives. Softer ground, grassy pastures, and comfortable living mean their hooves don’t wear down the way nature intended.

Over time, those hooves continue to grow. If they become too long, they can change the way a pig walks, place extra stress on their joints, and eventually lead to discomfort or even lameness. Something as simple as an annual hoof trim can make a tremendous difference in a pig’s mobility and quality of life.

At EPIC Outreach, hoof trims are simply part of routine wellness care. Just like scheduling a yearly checkup or dental cleaning, we plan ahead to make sure each pig’s feet stay healthy. While some pigs need trims more often than others, many benefit from having their hooves evaluated and trimmed about once a year. It’s not always the easiest job, some pigs are more enthusiastic participants than others, but it’s one of the many ways we help them live happy, healthy lives.

One of the things we love most about caring for pigs is helping people see them differently. Good pig care isn’t just about providing food and shelter. It’s about paying attention to the little things that help them thrive. Healthy feet mean comfortable pigs.

And comfortable pigs can spend their days doing what pigs do best like exploring, rooting, napping in the sunshine, and reminding us that sometimes the smallest acts of care make the biggest difference. – Jessie, EPIC Outreach
